Foot fetishist gets jail time, mental health treatment

OREGON CITY -- A man who fondled and kissed women's legs in department stores after persuading them to try on shoes has been sentenced to six months in the Clackamas County Jail.
Steven George Bronson, 46, also will serve at least four months in the county's work-release center and remain on formal probation for three years. He also must register as a sex offender, undergo mental health treatment and avoid any contact with his victims or visit department stores that sell shoes. Bronson pleaded no-contest to two counts of third-degree sexual abuse Tuesday in Clackamas County Circuit Court, after plea negotiations between Deputy District Attorney Scott P. Healy and defense attorney Diane C. Rader. Judge Jeffrey S. Jones found Bronson guilty and accepted terms of the plea deal, dropping additional counts of third-degree sexual abuse and a harassment charge.
Healy said the sentence was fashioned to ensure immediate public safety, then try to address the root causes of Bronson's behavior.
Police first became aware of the case in mid-July, when a man conned women at a Clackamas-area Target store at least three times. Each time, he asked women to try on shoes, supposedly to find out whether his wife -- or girlfriend, in some versions of the story -- might like them. But once he had the opportunity, he began touching the women's feet and legs, sometimes rubbing his face on their thighs.
He then pulled the same scams in a Ross Dress For Less store on Southeast 82nd Avenue, west of Happy Valley, and again at Target's Clackamas store.
Sheriff's deputies arrested Bronson in August, after he was spotted outside the Willamette Falls Urgent Care Center/Woman's Health Center, west of Happy Valley.
