Human skull found near Sandy turns out to be a medical specimen

December 02, 2009, 6:03PMInvestigators have determined that a human skull found Monday near an old crash site north of Sandy is a medical specimen -- not related to any crimes or disappearances. However, police do not know how the old skull got there. Detective Jim Strovink, Clackamas County said the skull was found by a hiker navigating a steep slope off Bluff Road. He said the hiker also happened upon an old wrecked pickup about 40 feet up the slope from the skull. "Naturally, he put two and two together and assumed that the skull came from the pickup crash," Strovink said. A search-and-rescue team began combing the site for additional bones or other evidence. Meanwhile, the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office determined that the skull was a specimen used for medical or biological studies. Strovink said homicide detectives breathed a sigh of relief, but that the discovery led to another puzzle. "So, how did it get there?" Strovink said. "We may never figure that out."
